Oat'ed to...

Oats and all their glory

Porridge, oatmeal, prison food, slop plop, whatever you want to call it oats are undeniably one of the most nutritious, affordable and efficient breakfast options we have in this modern day and age! By being high in both soluble and insoluble fiber, having a low glycemic index and by being effective at reducing levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff), it's no wonder that a lot of people consider them to be a superfood - is it a bird? Is is a plane? Hell no it's Captain Quaker! Don't be deceived by how ugly porridge looks when in it's naked form, it can be dressed up fantastically and in an infinite number of ways. Whats more, oats are extremely filling and if like me you're hungry a lot of the time (somewhere between 17-22 hours a day) then this satisfying wholegrain will wholeheartedly prevent you from eating off you're co-worker's face come the mid-morning slump.

A few tips when it comes oats:

  1. Get creative - Oatmeal can be flavored, topped or prepared in an endless number of ways as its what I like to call a 'blank canvas food'. From being infused with apple and cinnamon to enriched with chocolate and peanut butter; sweet, savory, salty, spicy, the sky's the limit!
  2. If you really are not a fan of cooked oats (the texture can put some people off) don't dismay, there are still ways to sneak them into your diet. Try blending oats into a flour and substituting this into baked goods, try adding them into blended fruit smoothies/milkshakes or even use them at dinner time to give chicken a crispy coating or as a binding agent in burgers!
  3. Try to avoid those pre-made instant oatmeal packets/pots as despite being delicious, they are often packed with tons of sugar and additives that unfortunately transform the wonderful oats inside from less Jennifer Lawrence to more Jocelyn Wildenstein.
So, now you have that down, all that's left to do is go and eat the oats, EAT ALL THE OATS!!!
