Pudding Porridge, 3 Ways

Who says breakfast has to be boring?

Banana bread...
Apple pie...
Blueberry muffin, oh my!
So folks, we're into September and you know what that means, right? Yep, it's the long-awaited return of the type of weather that makes you:
A) Wish you were a small rodent so that it would be acceptable for you to permanently sleep in a huge ball of cotton.
B) Purchase enough knitted jumpers to ensure that sheep across the nation look like they're on a calendar girls shoot.
C) Seriously consider cutting off your ears because in all honesty, the threat of wind chill just isn't worth it.
Actually, if you live in the UK (the south-east in particular), you will know that the weather has been a little, shall we say, schizophrenic throughout the majority of August. We lost the sun a while ago, no-one's really sure where he went, he just sort of took off (probably eloping with that cow, the moon). In fact, I think that the sun must be the thing that walks out on us Brits most frequently during our lifetimes, usually when we need him most (weddings, BBQ's etc) and without any warning or explanation. Just gone. And yet, we will always welcome him back with open arms, beaming smiles and eternally devoted worship. What the hell? That is in no way fair! You know those relationships your mother warned you about when you were young? We're all in one people! With that big, burning bogey in the sky!
Anyway, forgetting that little tirade, September is actually the beginning of my favourite time of the year. You see, September means that Autumn is starting and with it comes Halloween, family birthdays (mine included), bonfire night, Winter and last but not least, the crown jewel of the year, Christmas :). Aside from my growing excitement, I have also discovered, by other means, how to deal with the approaching chill and in the last three days of this month have decided to jazz up my breakfast staple in a variety of warming ways. As you may or may not know, oats are one of my favourite things to eat, not because they taste great, because in my opinion they don't. Plain oats taste like dullness and shame. However, they can be made to taste phenomenal (without the need of half a kilo of honey and a tub of Nutella - although that doesn't sound too bad).
The base of the three recipes below are all the same:
  • 1/2 cup of oats
  • 1 cup of water
  • Placed in a saucepan over a low-medium heat for around 3-5 minutes or until thickened to desired taste. The add-ins are what take this simple breakfast from a stodgy bore to an edible hug.

Banana Bread Oatmeal

Add-ins:
1/2 ripe banana, mashed and stirred into the oats whilst they are cooking.
Some chopped walnuts.
Optional - 1 tsp sweetener of choice (I actually think it was sweet enough without any).
Optional (but recommended) - a dash of cinnamon.
Optional (but insisted upon) - a few dark chocolate chips.
Either stir the extras into the porridge or sprinkle them on top as pictured here, whatever the case you're in for a treat.

Best enjoyed in bed, watching Game of Thrones whilst pretending you don't have to get up, ever.

Apple Pie Oatmeal

Add-ins:
1 small apple, chopped into small pieces and stirred into the oats whilst they are cooking.
1 tsp sweetener of choice, stirred in (I went for truvia).
1/2 tsp cinnamon, stirred in.
Optional - a few raisins.
Optional - a sprinkling of extra cinnamon on top and a few drops of vanilla extract.

Best enjoyed whilst looking outside at the cold autumnal morning and deciding whether or not to press charges against the squirrel that is using your washing line to inappropriately show off how acrobatic it is.

Blueberry Muffin Oatmeal

Add-ins:
A small handful of fresh or frozen blueberries - however many your blueberry needs demand.
1 tsp sweetener of choice (I once again went for truvia).
A few drops of vanilla extract.
Optional (but endorsed) - 1/4 tsp cinnamon.
Stir all of the above into the oats after they have finished cooking and eat with your face.

Best enjoyed wearing an array of scarves, before having to brace whatever unpleasantness the seasonal weather may throw at you.
